WHAT IS IPM? Integrated Pest Management

"Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical and chemical tools in a way that minimizes economic, health and environmental risks." * Where conventional pest control involves following a rigid "one size fits all" spraying schedule, Integrated Pest Management applies treatment customized to address the specific needs of the home or business. The result is effective treatment of the pest problem at a lower cost and with minimal use of pesticides. Beyond simply exterminating pests, IPM considers factors that allow pests to become a problem in the first place. * From: 1994 Integrated Pest Management Practices on 1991 Fruits and Nuts, RTD Updates: Pest Management, USDA-ERS, 8pp WHY USE IPM? Cost - Since IPM is customized treatment, you pay only for the treatment appropriate to your needs. Typical savings could be as much as 30 - 40% over a conventional pest control service! Effectiveness - The conventional method of spraying around a building, and chasing pests from one place to another is now recognized as being ineffective and potentially hazardous. Health - While IPM does not eliminate the use of them, the use of pesticides is greatly reduced.
